ASP.NET OpenSource
ASP.NET is a free technology that enables web developers to create dynamic web
applications. ASP.NET can be used to create anything from small, personal websites to large, enterprise-class web applications. All you need to get started with ASP.NET is the free .NET Framework and the free Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition.
The .NET Framework 3.0 and Visual Studio 2008 bring great new functionality around Web development and design that makes building standards based, next generation Web sites easier than ever. From the inclusion of ASP.NET AJAX into the runtime, to new controls, the new LINQ data capabilities, to improved support for CSS, JavaScript and others, Web development has taken a significant step forward.
While there is less open source softare in the ASP.NET community, it has a healthy selection of powerful applications. A few are mentioned below. Some may require an additional cost for a MSSQL database but many are free to host and the staff will be pleased to install them at no setup cost.
ASP.NET AJAX is built into .NET 3.5, and allows you to:
- Create Web 2.0 and next-generation interfaces with reusable AJAX components
- Enhance existing pages using powerful AJAX controls with support for all modern browsers
- Access remote services and data from the browser without tons of complicated script
- Take advantage of the improved efficiency and ease of use in Visual Studio 2008, with its built-in support for ASP.NET AJAX, improved JavaScript support, and a new Web page designer interface
